Westway community gardens cover 3.5 acres of our estate. Our main green areas are Portobello Green, Maxilla Gardens, Blossom Dale and our award-winning Wildlife Garden.
Our green spaces are maintained by our Gardening team, John, Dan, Liz and Tomo.
Portobello Green is a community garden bordered by Portobello Road Market, Cambridge Road and the Westway flyover. It features a banana planation, the Grenfell Heart, a colourful seasonal raised bed commemorating the victims and survivors of the Grenfell Fire, and many beds of native and non-native flowers, shrubs and trees. The Green was awarded Green Flag status in 2025.
Maxilla Gardens is a large outdoor green space, next to Bay20 Community Space on St. Marks Road, W10 4JG. The gardens were refurbished in 2024 and opened under the theme of ‘Life Under the Westway: Maxilla Gardens’.
Blossom Dale is situated underneath the Westway, in between Latimer Sports Centre and Silchester Estate. This calm space is a spring garden, with many shrubs, trees and plants looking their colourful best early in the year.
Our own wildlife garden and pond, near the Westway Sports Centre, is well established and was awarded the North Kensington Environment Forum Trophy, as part of The Brighter Kensington and Chelsea Scheme. The garden is only planted with plants that were known to be native before the last Ice Age.
We’re always looking for green-fingered enthusiasts!
You don’t need any experience, just enthusiasm and a desire to be outdoors. We’ll support you to develop your passion, skills and knowledge. You’ll be helping shape the green canvas in and around the Westway estate and across the ward of Notting Dale.
We have opportunities for individuals and organisations.
If you are interested in helping wildlife thrive in our urban environment, then our Gardening projects are for you.
