Grenfell Tower 8th Anniversary Community Grants FAQs

What are Westway Trust’s community investment priorities, and how do they influence your funding programmes?

Westway Trust has identified six priority areas for investment activity within the community, based on our experience, consultation with local people and groups, and research we commissioned in 2018/9. The six priority areas are:

  1. Isolation
  2. Spaces for young people
  3. Recreation and exercise
  4. Economic participation
  5. Arts and culture
  6. The environment

As a result of the research, all of our current funding programmes outlined below, reflect a commitment to improving opportunities for local people in these priority areas.

Who can apply for this grant?

Applications are welcome from:

  • Constituted, not-for-profit community groups based in Kensington & Chelsea
  • Un-constituted, not-for-profit community groups based in Kensington & Chelsea (with a sponsor organisation in place)

Priority will be given to groups based in the five wards of North Kensington: Colville, Dalgarno, Notting Dale, Golborne, and St Helens.

Can we apply for funding if we are not a constituted group?

Yes – but you will need a sponsor organisation to manage the grant on your behalf. This sponsor must have appropriate governance, safeguarding, and financial arrangements in place.

What kinds of activities or events will be funded?

Funding is for open community events and activities that mark the anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire and bring people together in remembrance.

Examples could include:

  • Memorial gatherings
  • Arts or cultural activities
  • Community meals or tea afternoons
  • Exhibitions or performances

Events must be inclusive and accessible to the local community.

How much can I apply for?

You can apply for any amount between £100 and £1,000. We encourage applicants to only request the funding they need so more groups can be supported. Applications for smaller amounts are welcome.

What governance and safeguarding measures are required?

Applicants must ensure that:

  • Appropriate governance procedures are in place for the project’s size and scope
  • Safeguarding measures are considered (e.g. DBS checks)
  • Public liability insurance is arranged where relevant
  • Accounts or financial statements are provided (or via a sponsor organisation for un-constituted groups)

What costs can be covered by the grant?

Eligible costs include:

  • Venue hire
  • Equipment hire or purchase
  • Artist or facilitator fees
  • Marketing and publicity materials
  • Catering for community gatherings
  • Materials for workshops or activities

Costs must be reasonable and directly related to the anniversary event.

What information do I need to include in my application?

You should provide:

  • A fully costed project budget (including other funding sources, if any).
  • Cost quotes where appropriate.
  • Evidence of licences to use space (if holding activities in public areas).

Can I hold my event on the Westway estate?

Yes – but you will need to apply for an event licence from Westway Trust. You may also need to provide:

  • Risk assessment
  • Temporary Event Notice (if required)
  • Public liability insurance
  • Event plan or schedule

More information on available venues can be found at the Westway Trust website.

Is equipment available to support our event?

Yes. You can request a loan of equipment for your event. Complete the equipment loan form on the Westway website and you’ll receive a response within 2 working days.

Will having received a previous anniversary grant affect my chances?

Not necessarily – funding is based on the strength and community benefit of your application. However, priority may be given to groups who have not recently received support.

Can religious or cultural remembrance activities be funded?

Yes – religious or cultural remembrance events are welcome, provided they are inclusive, accessible, and benefit the wider North Kensington community.

Please check the application deadline to ensure your event falls within the correct funding period.
