Celebrating the History and Impact of Supplementary Schools

The Supplementary Schools Archive Exhibition was held on Friday 29 May 2026, bringing together schools, partners and community members to celebrate decades of achievement and community impact. For over three decades, supplementary schools have played a vital role in North Kensington, supporting young people academically, celebrating cultural heritage and strengthening communities.

Held at ACRES, the community-curated exhibition was the inaugural public showcase of the Supplementary Schools Archive Project (delivered as part of the Westway Trust Archive Project). It highlighted North Kensington’s rich history of supplementary schools from the 1990s to the present day. Visitors explored a wide range of photographs, artwork, awards and student work, showcasing the contributions and achievements of nine participating schools.

The event was attended by MP Joe Powell and the new Mayor Janet Evans. Joe Powell described the importance of the supplementary schools, highlighting that they “provide additional support in core subjects like maths and English but also help people retain their connection to their own culture and language and help people access things like trips out of London.”

Representatives from participating schools also reflected on their impact within the community. They highlighted the importance of providing young people with a safe, welcoming space that helps tackles social isolation.

Doreen Davis, founder of Pimento Community Project, encouraged parents to take advantage of supplementary schools for their children. Emphasising the support and opportunities these schools provide, she said: “Use the supplementary schools – they’re there for you.”

The exhibition was a huge success and reflected the hard work and dedication of all the supplementary schools involved. Thank you to all nine participating schools for bringing this important exhibition to life.
