Upcycle Your Wardrobe: Build from the Basics – Intermediate

Course description

This intermediate course expands on your beginner sewing skills. It will help you customising your garments while continuing to work sustainably. This is to encourage less waste in our lives while learning different sewing skills.

Course Contents
  • Alterations
  • Looking at how we can use trimmings to customise garments.
  • Making flowers from fabrics
  • The making of simple bags
  • Looking at the internet/Instagram for different ways of customising garments.
  • Looking at different designers for inspiration
  • For some advanced students, using ready-made patterns
Learning objectives

By the end of the course, you will have:

  • Developed intermediate sewing skills across a range of project types.
  • Created at least one completed upcycled item (garment, or accessory).
  • Gained confidence working with different materials and textures.
  • Strengthened your ability to design and plan independent project.

What will I need to bring? Where can I get this? What do we provide?

Your own clothing, and ideas to share! We will provide basic materials plus access to brand new Bernina 3 series machines. We will provide information on sourcing additional materials sustainably

Will I get feedback? What could I do next?

You will receive regular one-to-one and group feedback to support both your technical skills and creative development

At the end of the course, you’ll present your finished project and reflect on your progress.

Advanced sewing or textile design courses

Developing a small collection of upcycled products

Selling items such as bags.

Fees exemption applies if you are in receipt of state benefits, on a low income (under £28, 860 per year) and have residential status.
