What is the course about?

An English course for Speakers of Other Languages for students at Entry level 1 whose literacy level fall below their speaking level. It will cover Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing skills 

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course? 

Yes, you will need to do a pre-course assessment to establish your level of English before enrolling onto the course. 

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications? 

This course is for Entry 1 ESOL learners. You can already say and write a few things in English about your daily life and ask and answer simple questions. Now, you want to build your confidence, increase your vocabulary, and write more clearly about the world around you. 

What topics does the course cover? 
  • Organising and structuring different types of texts: letters, emails, essays, and reports 
  • Organising ideas logically across paragraphs 
  • How to write a sentence – use of clauses 
  • How to write a paragraph correctly – what a paragraph should contain 
  • How to punctuate – full stops, commas, semi-colons, colons 
  • How to choose the right vocabulary for formal speaking 
  • How to structure more formal speaking such as presentations 
  • Linking devices and cohesive writing 
  • Editing and proofreading techniques 
  • Transferring writing structure to spoken communication 
  • Using appropriate register and tone 
  • Expanding formal vocabulary 
  • Planning and delivering presentations 
  • Speaking and responding confidently in job interviews and workplace meetings 
How will I be taught and assessed? Will there be any work outside the class? 

 

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of English. 

You will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole class.  

Your tutor will also work with you individually. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life.  

You will need to do work outside the classroom

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get? 

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in. Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets and let you know if there are any other resources that you might need to get.

What will I achieve?  

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • write simple sentences 
  • share information about yourself 
  • describe people and places 
  • use punctuation correctly 
  • feel more confident writing in English at home, in your community, and when using services like schools, healthcare, or job centres 
  • Obtain relevant information from short written text 

 

When I finish, what should I be able to do next? 

After completion of this course there are several courses you could progress onto. Your tutor will advise you on your next step.
