What is the course about?

This course will help you refine your writing by focusing on meaning, precision, and style—going beyond accuracy to explore how language choices shape your message and influence your reader.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, you will need to do a pre-course assessment to establish your level of English before enrolling onto the course.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This course is for advanced ESOL learners (Level 2) who wish to strengthen their writing by using grammar creatively, expanding vocabulary, and developing a confident, expressive style. You should already be able to write clear, structured English for everyday and work-related purposes.

What topics does the course cover?
  • Using grammar to create meaning—adding authority, creating emphasis, building drama and tension, persuading and influencing the reader, and shifting between direct/indirect, formal/informal, polite/rude.
  • Avoiding unnecessary repetition in writing.
  • Changing rhythm, pace, and tone for effect.
  • Creating vivid imagery through word choice and stylistic devices.
  • Using metaphors, similes, and figurative language effectively.
  • Expanding vocabulary for professional, academic, and creative contexts.
How will I be taught and assessed? Will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of English.

You will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole class.

Your tutor will also work with you individually. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life.

You will need to do work outside the classroom.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in.

Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets and let you know if there are any other resources that you might need to get.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Use grammar deliberately to shape meaning and tone, including to add authority, create emphasis, build drama, or persuade.
  • Shift style and register to suit professional, academic, and creative purposes.
  • Avoid repetition and redundancy in your writing.
  • Change rhythm, pace, and tone to engage the reader and control emphasis.
  • Create vivid imagery through effective use of vocabulary, metaphors, and similes.
  • Use precise and varied vocabulary to convey subtle shades of meaning.
  • Edit and refine your work for clarity, flow, and reader impact.
  • Structure paragraphs logically to guide the reader through your argument or narrative.
  • Write with an awareness of audience expectations and adapt your style accordingly.
When I finish, what should I be able to do next?

 Progress onto employment.
