Avondale Park’s Wildlife Area revitalised by Postcode Gardening Volunteers

Once a struggling, shaded corner where previous plantings had failed, Avondale Park’s Wildlife Area has been revived by our volunteer Postcode Gardeners.

Beginning work in late spring, the team reshaped the space with a naturalistic design of deadwood stumps and logs, introducing plant species suited to the dry shade and the park’s high footfall. The new plantings (including evergreens such as euphorbia, ferns, ivies, sarcococca, mahonia, epimedium, and liriope, alongside seasonal varieties like pulmonaria, ajuga, tiarella, primrose, foxglove, and geranium) will provide year-round structure, pollinator forage, and wildlife habitat.

This marks the first stage of a two-part project; in autumn, the second adjacent site will be planted, and both areas enriched with early bulbs such as bluebell, winter aconite, snowdrop, and wood anemone to extend colour and biodiversity into late winter and spring.
