What is the course about?

This course is designed to help you improve your English and develop the skills you need for work. You will practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing in work-related situations.

Is a pre-enrolment interview or assessment required for this course?

Yes, you will need to do a pre-course assessment to establish your level of English before enrolling onto the course.

What level is the course and do I require particular skills, experience or prior qualifications?

This is an Entry 3 – Level 1 ESOL class for adults aged 19 and over.

You can already talk about everyday topics, read simple texts, and write short messages, but you want to improve your English for work and build confidence in speaking, reading, writing, and listening.

What topics does the course cover?
  • Search and apply for jobs
  • Communicate clearly with managers, co-workers, and customers
  • Work well in a team
  • Understand your rights and responsibilities at work

We will work on real-life tasks such as completing application forms, preparing for interviews, writing workplace emails, taking phone messages, and reading job adverts. You will also build your vocabulary for different types of jobs and workplace situations.

How will I be taught and assessed? Will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn in a supportive and welcoming environment. The tutor will help you discover rules and features of English.

You will work in pairs or small groups, and sometimes as a whole class.

Your tutor will also work with you individually. Everything that you learn will help you in your daily life.

You will need to do work outside the classroom.

Are there any other costs or equipment I need to get?

You will need a pen, some lined A4 paper and a file to keep your work in.

Your tutor will provide handouts and worksheets and let you know if there are any other resources that you might need to get.

What will I achieve?

By the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Communicate clearly at work – Take part in short conversations with managers, co-workers, and customers, using polite language, asking questions, and responding appropriately.
  • Understand and follow workplace instructions – Listen to short instructions from a manager or colleague and repeat them back or follow them to complete a task correctly.
  • Explore job opportunities – Read and understand job adverts, match your skills to job requirements, and identify the steps needed to apply.
  • Complete job application forms – Fill in paper or online application forms accurately with personal information, skills, and experience.
  • Prepare for job interviews – Practice answering common interview questions and giving examples of your skills and experience.
  • Understand rights and responsibilities at work – Learn about equality, discrimination, health and safety, and basic employment laws in the UK.
  • Work effectively in a team – Take turns, share ideas, and agree on decisions in a group activity or discussion.
  • Build workplace vocabulary – Learn and use common words and phrases for different types of jobs, tools, equipment, and workplace situations.
When I finish, what should I be able to do next?

After completion of this course you can go onto our Digital Skills courses, Entry 3 or Level 1 Speaking and Listening Exam class or start Volunteering to practice your English.
