Community Impact Fund– Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Apply for a grant from our Community Impact Fund

Who can apply for this grant?

You can apply if you are a community organisation, registered charity, CIO, CIC, or a community group with a written constitution or governing document. Your organisation must have an annual turnover between £20,000 and £100,000 and operate within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), with a clear benefit to North Kensington communities.

How much funding can I apply for?

You can apply for up to £3,000. However, we encourage applicants to apply only for what they need, and not feel they must apply for the maximum amount. This helps us support as many organisations as possible.

What kind of projects do you fund?

We fund short term projects or events that deliver benefits to the local community. These could be social, economic, or environmental in nature and should take place in North Kensington.

Can I apply for ongoing or long-term projects?

This fund can support both one-off activities and short-term projects delivered over a period of time. If you are applying for a project that runs across multiple sessions or dates, you should clearly outline the start and end dates within your application. While longer-term activity is eligible, the funding should relate to a defined and time-bound project.

Do I need to be based in North Kensington?

Your organisation must operate and deliver its services within RBKC, but priority will be given to projects that clearly benefit communities in North Kensington, particularly within the five wards.

Where must the activity take place?

The project/events/activities must take place within one of the five North Kensington wards: Dalgarno, Colville, Notting Dale, St Helen’s, or Golborne.

What costs can I include in my budget?

You should include all relevant project costs in your budget, ensuring they are reasonable and appropriate for the activity. This may include materials, venue hire, staffing, or equipment. You should also include any additional funding or in-kind support, and whether this has been secured.

Do I need to have match funding?

Match funding is not required, but we encourage applicants to demonstrate other sources of income where possible, particularly for larger projects.

What happens if I am awarded less than I applied for?

Due to demand, we may offer less than the amount requested. You should consider how your project could still be delivered if partially funded.

How will my application be assessed?

Applications will first be checked against the eligibility criteria (can be found in the guidance section). Eligible applications will then be assessed based on the strength of the proposal, the level of community benefit, and how realistic and well-planned the project is. Once the application passes eligibility, the applications will be assessed by a panel consisting of Westway Trust Staff, Trustees and Community Members.

Does having received funding before affect my application?

Not necessarily. However, your application may be affected if you have previously received funding from us and did not comply with the Conditions of Grants.

When will I hear if my application is successful?

You may be contacted during the assessment process if further information is required. All applicants will be notified once a decision has been made by the Grants Panel.

When will I receive the funding?

Payment details will be requested from successful applicants after the funding decision has been made. Funding will be released once all conditions of the grant have been met.

What reporting is required?

You will be required to submit an impact report after the completion of your project/event. This will help us understand how the funding has been used and the difference it has made.

What happens if I don’t submit a report?

Failure to submit the required report may result in being asked to return the funding and could affect your eligibility for future funding.

What happens if my project changes or is cancelled?

If your project is cancelled, postponed, or significantly changes from what was outlined in your application, you may be required to return some or all of the funding.

Do I need a licence to run an event?

If your event is taking place on the Westway estate, you will need to apply for a licence before funding is released. You should allow at least six weeks for this process.

What do I need for a licence application?

You may be required to provide a risk assessment, a Temporary Event Notice (if necessary), public liability insurance, and an event plan or schedule.

What if I can’t get a licence for the Westway estate?

If your licence application is unsuccessful, you will need to provide evidence that you have permission to deliver your event at an alternative venue before funding is released.

Can I borrow equipment for my event?

Yes, where possible we can support community groups through equipment loan, including items such as tables, chairs, gazebos, bins, and audio equipment. Availability is subject to demand.
