General Information
The Westway Climbing Centre is a community-based centre, committed to
introducing local people to climbing. We run a large programme for local young
people, schools and community groups, and we aim to ensure that we are open to
all. We encourage use by people of differing abilities. Whatever your
requirements please contact us and we’ll do our best to help. Climbing is
not only for the physically able, and we encourage use by individuals and groups
with special needs.
The Westway Climbing Centre is one of the largest
climbing centres in the country, with over 2,200sqm of climbing for seasoned
climbers and beginners keen to “have a go”.
The Westway Climbing Centre is involved with the Climbing Community as well
as the Local Community. There will be times during the year when access is
restricted, or we are closed due to community events, climbing competitions and
the like. If our usual opening hours are affected by special events any changes
to access will be published on our website, telephone answering service, and in
the Sports Centre.
Route Setting
The Westway Climbing Centre has a huge route setting programme, and employs
some of the most respected setters in the country. At present there are
in the region of 350 routes up at any one time with a range of grades from F3 to
F8a. There will generally be about 50 boulder problems set at any one time
graded using the V system, from V0 to V8. We aim to set 70 new routes per
month on the walls, and to change all of the boulder problems every
month. Unless there are exceptional circumstances the route setting will
take place on weekdays from 9.30am until 4.30pm in order to minimise any impact
at very busy evening times and at weekends. If you have any comments or
suggestions about the route setting programme please email routesetting@westway.org

Section 2
Casual Usage, Prices and Entry Requirements
Competent Climbers
If you are a competent adult climber you can use the climbing centre at any
time it is open to the public. To gain access you will need to register and
undertake a short demonstration of basic climbing skills, including: putting on
a harness, tying in using a recognised knot (normally a rethreaded figure of
eight or a bowline), and demonstrating the techniques for belaying and lowering
a climber using a top rope. You should allow 10 minutes extra to register, and
there is no need to book a registration session. To use the climbing centre you
will need your own harness, climbing shoes, chalk bag, karabiner and belay
device. If you wish to lead climb you will need a rope of 30 metres length to
make use of all the leading walls, (up to 14.5 metres tall). If you do not have
enough equipment, there is a climbing shop on site, Urban Rock, (see
above).
Competent Climbers (under 18)
If you are 14 years of age or over, but not yet 18 years of age, you can
undergo a more rigorous demonstration of skills, usually lasting 1 hour, with
one of our instructors, to allow unsupervised access to the climbing walls. You
will also need parental consent to use the climbing wall without supervision,
which will normally involve at least one parental visit to the centre. (See more
details under section 4, Junior Programme).
Novice Climbers
A registered competent adult climber may supervise up to two novice
climbers at the Westway. You will need to both complete a novice supervision
form that gives full information on the restrictions and conditions placed on
both the novice and the supervisor during the climbing session. Forms are
available from the main reception desk
Junior Climbers
All climbers under 18, (other than those who fall into the category of
Competent Climbers under 18 as listed above), will need to be signed in by a
competent registered adult climber. A minor supervision form will need to be
completed by both parties. All juniors visiting the Westway Climbing Centre will
need to provide a parental consent form. A parent or legal guardian must sign
this form. Signatures of a person acting “in loco parentis” are
unfortunately not acceptable.
British Team Members
The Westway Climbing Centre supports the British Mountaineering Council
(BMC) and the British Team. Members of the British Climbing Team will have free
access to the Westway Climbing Centre for training purposes, whether personal or
as part of an organised training event. British Team Members MUST provide
proof of their current membership to the reception desk before entry, as agreed
with the BMC.

Beginners Climbing Courses
The beginners climbing course is designed for the complete novice, or
people who have perhaps done a little climbing in the past, but do not have a
grasp of the technical aspects of the activity. You will learn all you need to
know to continue climbing indoors safely. One of the main aims of the course is
to give you all the knowledge, and practice you need to take the competency
demonstration and register as a user of the climbing centre, (although we cannot
guarantee the outcome!). We offer courses every day of the week on a monthly
basis, for example, Monday evenings, four sessions, starting on the first Monday
of the month, 2 hours per session. You can also opt to complete the whole course
in one weekend. Please note that we will generally not allow those taking this
course to immediately supervise others in the climbing centre. In order to
register for unsupervised climbing, you will need to undertake the competency
demonstration on your next visit after the last session of the beginner’s
course. We recommend that you spend at least three months practicing your
newfound skills before introducing the activity to your
friends. Price: £99.00, standard user £65.00,
