At Portobello Green Fitness Club we have the equipment and facilities
for all your fitness needs (and we’ve just refurbished with new changing
and more saunas and steams) and replaced ALL our gym equipment. Our cardio and
resistance machines provide you with the basis for continual first class
workouts and we also have a separate fully-equipped free weights gym including a
smith machine, T-bar incline bench and flat bench press platforms; plus 2
walk-in squat racks and a huge array of brand new dumbbells ranging from 10 -
40kg (20 – 100lbs) in weight.
We hope you enjoy your visits and
take full advantage of your gym induction with free personal training sessions
from our fully qualified gym staff.

SERVICES & ACTIVITIES FOR YOU AT PORTOBELLO
GREEN:
Fitness Testing
By doing various tests we are able to determine both the aerobic and
anaerobic capacities of members. From these results we can determine what
areas need to be improved on – and therefore prescribe the correct
exercise for each individual member.
Fat Testing
Measuring body fat percentage is an easy way of determining the difference
between fat mass and lean body mass. Beneath our skin is a layer of subcutaneous
fat tissue which makes up our non-essential fat in the body.
It is
possible to measure fat at specific sites with skinfold calipers and working out
percentage of body fat. Having too much subcutaneous fat tissue makes our bodies
prone to developing coronary risk factors.
PERSONAL TRAINING SERVICE
The Fitness Team at PGFC are all qualified to deliver a personal training
service to Club members. Members receive an initial five free sessions as part
of their induction package. For details of further sessions speak to an
instructor or contact the gym manager gym@pgfc.org.uk (Usual costs: £35
per session or £160 for 5 sessions, or £300 for 10 sessions). We also
have an exclusive arrangement with a dedicated team of personal trainers from
Heart and Soul Personal Training – for more on their approach see
below.
What Is Personal Training?
Personal training is where the Trainer stays with you for the full session
on each visit. They monitor each aspect of your training program from technique
to intensity, from eating habits to sleep patterns. They advise and motivate you
every step of the way!
Depending on your reasons for using a Personal
Trainer, they can spend more time looking at each component of fitness and ways
to improve both physical and mental aspects of your health & fitness -
whether for sport-specific training, weight management or personal motivation.
They can also take you off-site to participate in other activities, not
available within the Club, such as outdoor running & cycling. The choice is
yours!

At Heart & Soul Personal Training, we don’t believe in just
getting in shape for special occasions like summer holidays, weddings or

Astanga Yoga (available to non-members at
£15 per session – including a full day Club pass)
A breath focused, dynamic and energetic form of yoga
to detoxify the body and calm the
mind. Astanga yoga has been taught at
Portobello Green Fitness Club by Mark Ansari since 1995. Uniquely among Fitness
Clubs in West and central London, Portobello Green offers three levels of
Astanga yoga, from beginners classes introducing new students to the basic
postures, correct breathing, and vinyasa (breath connected movement), to
intermediate level where the traditional sequence of postures is verbally taught
in a flowing dynamic class, to advanced self-practice (Mysore-style) where the
student experiences the true essence of Astanga yoga by practising at their own
pace, receiving hands-on adjustments and individual verbal
instruction. Mark is one of the UK’s
most experienced teachers. As well as his regular classes at Portobello Green
Fitness Club in west London, he also runs yoga retreats internationally and
teacher training intensives in the UK. He is co-author with Liz Lark of the
best-selling book “Yoga for Beginners” (Newleaf). Mark’s
unique approach is to make the dynamic Astanga yoga system accessible to nearly
all ability levels through the use of tried and tested modifications and
variations.
MARTIAL
ARTS Capoeira (available to
non-members at £8.50 per 90 minute session, or £7 for one-hour
classes)
An exciting form of afro-brazilian martial arts.
Combines the elegance of dance, martial arts, music and gymnastics into a sport
for strength, endurance and stamina.
Fight Club
Be the fighter you have always wanted to be! Learn
boxing punches, kicks, ducks and weaves. Great class to chisel those muscles and
develop your boxing skills.
Thai Boxing (available to non-members at
£7 per session)
Muay Thai or Thai Boxing is a self defence technique
developed by ancient warriors in Thailand. It is an intense full
body-conditioning workout, incorporating pad and shield work.

AT PORTOBELLO GREEN:
Squash court use is FREE to full members of
Portobello Green Fitness Club – but if you ONLY want to play squash ask
about an annual pay and play membership at £85 per year, plus £4.50
per game for squash, or £6 per visit if you want to use the other
facilities such as the gym and free weights room.
Alternatively pay £15 per visit
(– this is a day pass and can be used to play squash and also use all
other facilities during the day of the visit).

Club Squash
These sessions are run on a Thursday night and
Sunday lunchtime and provide an opportunity for all members to meet other squash
players and have a few friendly games. All levels are
welcome. Internal Squash
League: • We have 16 Leagues with 5
players in each • The league runs for
6 weeks
Club Teams
The Club currently has two teams in the Middlesex
Squash League. The league contains other Clubs from the Middlesex area. Our
first team is in Division 3 and the other team is in Division 6.
Tournaments
There are two graded tournaments held at the Club
each year. All players, from beginner to advanced levels, are welcome to
participate in these. Keep an eye out for dates and details, which will be
displayed around the Club.
Equipment – sales, hire and
re-stringing
Racquets, balls, grips, shoes and various other
pieces of equipment are on sale from Reception or Michael Phillips. Racquets can
be hired for £2.50 Michael also provides
a restringing service for Squash and Tennis racquets. Please contact him
