Who Can Benefit from the Scheme

Who Can Benefit from the Scheme?

The young people benefiting will have to demonstrate that they are enthusiastic and committed to regular training with the Trust and, in the case of the performance bursary, be judged by Trust coaches/instructors to have the potential to progress in the development schemes.

What criteria will the young people have to meet?

The key criteria used to assess whether a young person should be awarded a bursary are as follows:

  • Must live in Kensington & Chelsea, Hammersmith, Brent or Westminster. The highest priority will be given to young people from RBKC
  • Must be under 18 years old when they apply for the bursary
  • Priority will be given to young people who have already participated in Trust sport or fitness activities regularly (on average at least once a week) for three months or have been involved in the Trust’s outreach programme for a school term
  • Parental/guardians’ income must be less than £20,000 per annum. (Flexibility will be shown where parents can show that there are extenuating circumstances which influence their net disposable income e.g. having to finance more than one child in the family regularly participating in sport. It will always be up to the parents/guardians to clearly demonstrate their low income status)
  • Must be recommended by a Trust coach/instructor/member of development staff or an agency that the Trust sports development team works with
  • Must commit her/himself to a minimum regular attendance at their chosen activity over the period of the bursary (usually six months although in the case of development bursaries it will be shorter)

How to apply

The young person and his/her parents/guardians have to submit a completed bursary application form (obtainable from the Sports Managers at the Westway Sports Centre, Fitness Manager at PGFC or the Trust Community Sports Team) to the Trust Director of Sport and Fitness. This form includes questions on parental/guardians’ income and asks for evidence of this income.

What happens next?

Once the Trust has considered the application, a written decision is sent to the applicant. Bursary money may be used to pay for such costs as coaching sessions, fitness training, holiday programme sessions, specialist clothing or equipment, travel and competition entry fees. The Trust will usually specify how the money can be used. In general there will be no appeal procedure against the Trust’s decision.

How is the bursary paid?

The bursary money is paid to the parents/guardians of the young person in a manner decided by the Trust which suits the circumstances. Examples of different methods are:

  • Reimbursement on receipts (signed by a Westway coach or Sports Manager, PGFC Fitness Manager of Sports Development Coordinator) being sent to the Westway Development Trust’s offices
  • Directly through the Westway Sports Centre or Fitness Club. For example a number of visits can be set up as prepaid on the Westway or PGFC reception computer
  • Amounts of say 25% of the bursary being paid in advance with the next amount being paid on confirmation of the previous amount having been spent
