School Holidays

During the school holidays (Easter, summer and half-terms) the team organises all-day multi-sport activities for children aged 8-13 years old either at the Westway Sports Centre or at another local venue. These programmes are aimed predominantly at children who wouldn’t normally be involved in sport regularly including children referred through various local community projects. The team also works in partnership with Portobello Green Fitness Club to run a gym, squash and class programme for 13-17 year olds on weekday afternoons during holiday periods.

To give an idea of the sort of activities included in the holiday programmes, during the 2011 Easter and May break, the Sports Development Team organised a low-cost holiday scheme based at Sion Manning School in North Kensington. The scheme was aimed at 8-14 year olds who liked doing a variety of sporting activity but were not involved on a regular basis playing one particular sport. Some of the 60 children attending the activity days had been referred to the scheme by other organisations. The children took part in trampolining, canoeing, climbing, swimming, tennis, football, skateboarding and table tennis. They also went on trips to the Imax Cinema, Thorpe Park and Hyde Park. These all-day holiday programmes aim to encourage the young people to choose a sport they like and start regular participation, possibly at the Westway Sports Centre, but there is no pressure to make any commitment.

Young people who have experienced difficulties at school

The Community Sports Team works with pupil referral units and Kensington and Chelsea College to provide sport and fitness opportunities to young people who have had difficulty integrating into mainstream school or who have been unsuccessful in gaining qualifications at the age of 16 and need to bridge the gap between education and employment. These sessions are focused, first of all, on encouraging the young people to take part regularly but they are also seen as an opportunity for young people to improve their skills and achieve Assessment and Qualifications Alliance or even governing body qualifications where possible. Most of the sessions take place at the Westway Sports Centre where the young people can take part in football, tennis, climbing, fives, gym etc.

The Community Sports Team has worked with Latymer Pupil Referral Unit and the Pupil Parent Partnership for some years now, basing the activities at the Westway Sports Centre. Although the children can be challenging, every effort is made to ensure that the young people learn something from the sessions and that they are encouraged to take part in sport their own time.
