8-13 year olds, fathers and sons and ethnic minorities

8-13 year olds that are at risk of becoming obese

There are two parts to this programme:

  • The MEND project is run in partnership with NHS Kensington and Chelsea. MEND is a nationwide project which aims to encourage children and their parents to become more active and to eat a more balanced diet. Each MEND programme requires the children and their parents to attend exercise and healthy eating oriented sessions twice a week for ten weeks.
  • The community team also works in a few local primary schools during lunch break with groups of children (selected by teachers) who are inactive or who have weight issues. These sessions are focused on the children having fun with a view to their feeling more confident to take part in sport more regularly.

Fathers and sons

In this project the Community Sports Team aims to improve the communication between fathers and their sons through the medium of sport and exercise. The programme is flexible to meet the wishes of the participants and could include such activities as gym sessions, a day trip cycling or fishing, or a football tournament. Workshops are also organised aimed at supporting the fathers in their parental role, addressing sexual health issues, communication, drug advice etc.

This project aims to get fathers and their sons to participate together in sport, fitness and other activities. For example, a group of Somali fathers trained together with their sons in the Westway gym on a Friday night for a period of three months and then were treated to a bicycle ride through Richmond Park on a Sunday afternoon at the end of the project. It is hoped that through the fathers and sons taking part in activities together communication between them will be improved.

People from black and ethnic minority communities

The Trust has played a key role in supporting the Supplementary Schools Consortium over the ten years of its existence. The schools represent a range of ethnic groups including Afro-Caribbean, Somalian, Sudanese, Moroccan and Eritrean. The Community Sports Team is committed to running sports activities with these groups where appropriate and also to linking them in with other fitness and health opportunities in the community.
