Thorpe Close

Thorpe Close comprises 32 offices, which are home to 22 charities and two creative businesses (a TV production company and a web search specialist). The charity offices on Thorpe Close are leased at one-third of the market rate, to registered charities whose work benefits the Kensington and Chelsea area.

In the middle of Thorpe Close is the Portobello Green Fitness Club where facilities include squash courts, a fully equipped gym, free weights area, a wide range of fitness classes, plus café bar, beauty treatment rooms, acupuncture and a sports injury clinic.

At the end of Thorpe close is the trendy Portobello Green Arcade housing 25 retail units. Tenants here include fashion designers, jewellers, home furnishings and two cafes. All the units are for businesses making their own goods on site though some have now expanded with manufacturing facilities elsewhere including at our own Acklam Workshops.

Thorpe Close also hosts markets 4 days a week. On Thursday there is the organic food market under the Market Tent and on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the ever-popular Portobello Road markets runs under the attractively designed Market Tent and onto Thorpe Close where up to 200 stalls can be put-up. Many of these sell original clothing, collectables and fashion items for which the market is justifiably known across the world.

To top off Thorpe Close there is beautiful Portobello Green. Our gardeners take a lot of pride in planting and maintaining interesting flowering and foliage plants here, while maturing trees planted in 1977 provide shade and contrast. People can either laze in the sunshine on the soft grass, or sit under the shelter of the trees and on the park benches.

Other brands you'll know include London & New York Fashion Week regulars Preen, hot label Millau and new designers such as Sharon Obiozor with her Made With Love label, but the real surprises and perfect gifts might just as well come from the niche collections offered by Japanese designer specialists Relax Garden or Philmore Clague's unique fashion, cut in Portobello and sold around the world; or the leading edge yet wearable womens fashions available from Valli, Brazilian fusionistas Genel or Portobello's own modern womens' classicists, Baby Ceylon.

The arcade is open on Saturdays until 7pm in the run-up to Christmas; and many boutiques now also open on Sundays. The shops prosper through the week and many of the designers there have moved on from the weekend markets that bring in excess of 100,000 visitors to the area.
