The London Living Wage Campaign has been led by London Citizens, the capital's largest and most diverse alliance of active citizens and community leaders. London Citizens has over 83 member organisations, including faith congregations, schools, student organisations, community associations, trade union branches and resident groups. Members all share a commitment to taking action for the common good, and helping people of all backgrounds and ages to become active leaders who can help shape the public life of the city.
Westway Development Trust Chief Executive Martyn Freeman says,
"For some years the Trust has supported London Citizens' work in West London, where they have championed the idea of a London Living Wage. This follows their experience in East London, where they have had some notable successes in negotiations with large employers in Canary Wharf.
As a social enterprise employing over 100 staff and numerous contractors, in what is now one of the most expensive boroughs to live in London, we see a compelling case for the adoption of the London Living Wage by employers in the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea.
This is why we have decided to lead by example - we now hope that this will encourage other responsible organisations locally to adopt the London Living Wage as well. There's a sense in which we hope our example will shame some of the bigger organisations in the Borough to act too.
For our part we have undertaken to help support smaller organisations in going through the same process we have, which involves working towards our entire supply chain paying a real living wage."
