The free shop, under motorway on Portobello Road – a community ‘swap shop’ which today runs as ‘Pennies and Pence’ in Thorpe close. Audience at Westway Theatre housed in a bay near Portobello Road. Jennifer Jenkins, chair of the Trust from 1974 to 1977. when she arrived ‘nothing much had happened. Local community groups were becoming cynical and disenchanted. Westway Nursery association researched, fund-raised and put into effect their own scheme for a pioneering nursery centre. Poster produced by the Print Shop, 1974. Sir Malby Crofton put himself onto the management committee and wanted an enquiry into whether ‘ spurious organisations’ had been set up to secure the election of left-wingers. Roger Matland, appointed Director in 1976, got the Charity Commissioner to point out the responsibility of committee members ‘to act with Toter's horse and cart in front of the temporary stables.
